1987-91 Toyota Camry and Celica - Grinding During Start
Many Toyota Camrys and Celicas built between 1987 and 1991 requiring a Bosch remanufactured SR230X or SR231X may grind or clash when starting, which can destroy the flywheel. To fix this situation, Toyota has released a new flywheel and starter pinion gear which has an improved bevel on the gears. All Bosch remanufactured SR230Xs and SR231Xs are remanufactured with the improved bevel starter pinion gear. When installing the starters, you should also check the condition of the flywheel. The new improved replacement flywheels are available through your local Toyota dealership.
