1986 Nissan Maxima - Insufficient Charge
A chronic problem with some 1986 Nissan Maximas (Bosch p/n AL247X) is a complaint of insufficient charging at idle or low speed driving. If after installing a replacement alternator this condition persists, Nissan suggests that the installer check the diameter of the pulley on the alternator (An instruction leaflet has been included with product to inform the installer.) If the pulley is larger than 69 mm/2.717", it should be replaced with a smaller pulley and a shorter drive belt which is available through Nissan. In effect, this speeds up the alternator thus creating higher alternator output at lower engine speeds.
