Mazda Rear Brake Squeal - 1990-93 Mazda 323 and Protege

A squeal may be heard from the rear brakes when applying the brakes on 1990-1993 Mazda 323 and Protege models.  This noise may be caused by a small amount of grease on the brake drum.  The grease was originally installed to prevent dirt from damaging the wheel bearing.  The amount of grease applied to the dust seal has been decreased on later production vehicles.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Remove the rear drums and brake shoes.
  2. Remove all dirt and grease from the brake backing plates and brake drum.
  3. Replace the brake shoes.
  4. Inspect all related parts for wear, then machine the brake drum as necessary.  Only drums containing deep grooves or blue (hot) spots should be replaced.
  5. Drums not showing these signs should be resurfaced by machining.  The maximum allowable brake drum inside diameter is stamped on the exterior drum surface.
  6. Reassemble the rear brakes.  Do not remove the remaining grease from the dust seal.
