Strange Water Pump Noises

Honda Accord, Civic 1992-1993

Symptoms: Humming or whining noises coming from the water pump. The noise is most audible below 1100 RPM, and occurs only when coolant is at normal operating temperature.

NOTE: This noise is often mistaken for a dry or faulty alternator bearing. Diagnose the symptom carefully.

Probable Cause: Normal friction between pump shaft and seal.

Corrective Action: Add water pump lubricant (listed in the Parts Information section below) to the radiator coolant.

1. Allow the radiator coolant to cool.
2. Carefully remove the radiator cap, then withdraw    200cc (6.8 oz.) of coolant with a syringe.
3. Add the water pump lubricant, and reinstall the radiator cap.
