1991 Probe - Discharged Battery

If frequent alternator replacements are required on 1991 Ford Probes (AL272X), check the hood latch "micro switch." The hood lamp on these vehicles is controlled by a switch attached to the hood latch. If the latch is improperly aligned or binding, the hood lamp will remain ON, even though the hood is completely closed. This condition causes the battery to be continually drained, which in turn causes undo stress on the alternator resulting in early failure. If necessary, the switch can be re-aligned by simply placing a thin diameter washer between the dashboard surface and the retainer nut on the hood cable.
